The Gospel of Mary Magdalene is so different than the gospels we’re often familiar with.

No birth story.

No list of miracles for “proof.”

No agenda for the cross as a transaction to be accepted by God.

What survives is fragmented: torn papyrus, missing pages, centuries of being nothing more than rumor.

A copy was bought in Cairo in 1896 but sat mostly untranslated for decades, delayed by two world wars and the death of the scholar who first took it on. It wasn’t until the 1970s that a full English translation finally reached a wider audience, nearly 80 years later.

In the pieces we have, Mary is shown as a leader among the disciples, entrusted with the true teachings of the Master.

A scene with Peter reveals early disagreements about the role and power of women.

The text wrestles with authority, the soul’s ascent, and what it means to see beyond the visible world.

Fragmentary, mysterious, deeply human, as much about power and belonging in early community as it is about mystical vision and enlightenment.

We’re so stoked to to hang together and see how this gospel connects with our own lives.
